•
The efficiency of port logistics is a critical factor for the competitiveness of Brazilian foreign trade. This article presents an in-depth analysis of strategic management models focused on optimizing port operations, reducing costs, and improving performance indicators. The study addresses the main Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) used in the sector, such as
Ship Waiting Time, Ship Turnaround Time, and TEU/hour productivity, highlighting the challenges faced by Brazilian ports in comparison with international benchmarks. Furthermore, it explores the strategic role of technology, including specialized logistics software (e.g., Port Management Systems and Simulation Software) and digital transformation initiatives (e.g., smart contracts), in optimizing container management— especially empty containers—and operational processes. Methodologies for cost reduction, such as the strategic use of cabotage and the analysis of external variables like climate, are also discussed. The findings suggest that the adoption of an integrated strategic management model, supported by advanced technology and a robust KPI system, is essential for identifying bottlenecks, promoting efficiency gains, and ensuring the sustained competitiveness of the Brazilian port sector in the global scenario.
