The search for meaning in the consumer society: a sociological interpretation of minimalism

Abstract

The modern consumer society has transformed the ways in which individuals produce meaning in their daily lives, turning the act of consumption from an economic necessity into a means of constructing identity, belonging, and values. This transformation generates a persistent sense of dissatisfaction and a continuous search for meaning in the individual. Minimalism emerges as a lifestyle orientation developed in response to this crisis of meaning, offering a sociological reaction to the excesses of modern life through simplicity, conscious consumption, and the pursuit of subjective balance. This article presents a literature-based conceptual analysis that examines the search for meaning in consumer society through the lens of minimalism. The theoretical framework is grounded in the perspectives of Baudrillard’s “consumer society”, Bauman’s “liquid modernity”, Weber’s “instrumental rationality”, and Fromm’s “having–being” dichotomy. The analysis reveals that minimalism is not merely a form of material simplification but also an alternative meaning-making strategy in the construction of modern identity and values. In conclusion, minimalism is interpreted as a cultural orientation that represents the individual’s effort to redefine meaning within the speed-, excess-, and spectacle-driven structure of consumer culture.

Keywords: Modernity, Consumer society, Minimalism, Search for meaning, Lifestyle, Sociological analysis.
