contents
We propose a geometric mechanism—dimensional locking—in which baryonic matter locally stabilizes the compact extra dimension in a 5D Kaluza--Klein theory. Vacuum regions, lacking this stabilizing effect, allow for geometric relaxation, producing an effective scalar degree of freedom in 4D. We show that the resulting effective dynamics maps onto a chameleon-type screened scalar field, providing a geometric interpretation of thin shells and environment-dependent masses. Using the non-linear boundary-value solvers developed in a companion technical article, we show that dimensional unlocking in laboratory vacua leads to fifth-force accelerations of order $10^{-10}$–$10^{-9}\,\mathrm{m/s^2}$ in centimeter-scale chambers. The mechanism is intrinsically falsifiable and compatible with precision atom-interferometric searches.
