- This paper explores the complex and often paradoxical nature of convivencia—the purported coexistence of Muslims, Christians, and Jews—during the Iberian Reconquista (8th to 15th centuries). While traditionally romanticized as a period of interfaith harmony and cultural flourishing, particularly in Al-Andalus, the reality was a dynamic interplay of cooperation, tension, and conflict, increasingly challenged by the advancing Christian kingdoms. We analyze how religious and cultural identities were negotiated, reshaped, and asserted under the shifting political and social pressures of reconquest. The study delves into the experiences of various groups, including the Mozarabs, Mudéjars, and Sephardic Jews, examining their legal statuses, cultural adaptations, and resistance strategies. By drawing upon diverse historical sources and contemporary historiographical debates, this paper aims to provide a nuanced understanding of convivencia, acknowledging both its moments of genuine cross-cultural exchange and its inherent hierarchies and eventual erosion in the face of escalating religious zeal and political consolidation, culminating in the homogenizing policies of late medieval Spain.
