-
Abstract
This paper develops a theory of the cognitive boundary as a foundational struc-
ture of human cognition that enables knowledge formation while simultaneously cre-
ating vulnerability to epistemic manipulation. I argue that consciousness requires
organizing frameworks—cognitive boundaries—that filter sensory chaos and estab-
lish stable reference points for understanding. While these boundaries are necessary
for coherent thought, they also function as sites of potential control when externally
shaped by institutional or algorithmic forces. Drawing on epistemology, cognitive
science, and critical theory, I trace how cognitive boundaries evolve from neces-
sary mental structures into instruments of what I term "digital colonization"—the
systematic reshaping of epistemic frameworks through artificial intelligence and al-
gorithmic systems. The central question becomes: who possesses the authority to
determine the cognitive boundaries of human understanding in the coming century?
Keywords: cognitive boundary, epistemology, digital colonization, artificial
intelligence, algorithmic control, epistemic structures
