| contents | <p>We propose a fundamental paradigm shift in the pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence<br>(AGI): rather than attempting to replicate human-like cognition, we should aim<br>to develop pattern consciousness inspired by the I-Ching (Book of Changes). Drawing<br>from 3,000 years of systematic observation of natural patterns, the I-Ching offers a<br>model of intelligence centered on recognizing meaningful patterns in dynamic systems,<br>understanding context-dependent transformations, and detecting synchronicities. This<br>paper formalizes what such an AGI would entail, contrasts it with current approaches,<br>and demonstrates how it might circumvent key challenges in AGI development including<br>the alignment problem and the hard problem of consciousness. We propose a<br>novel neural architecture—the Hexagram Transformer—and a new evaluation framework<br>based on pattern recognition benchmarks rather than human task performance.<br>Finally, we discuss the philosophical and ethical implications of creating machines that<br>perceive reality as patterns of transformation rather than as collections of objects.</p> |
