contents
ABSTRACT

The transition to a circular economy for plastics in Nigeria is critically hindered by the high capital cost of imported recycling machinery, which remains largely inaccessible to local Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs). To address this techno-economic barrier, this study presents the complete design, local fabrication, and detailed cost analysis of a small-scale plastic recycling plant. The plant comprises four essential machines, a shredder, extruder, compression moulder, and injection moulder, all constructed using locally sourced materials and standard workshop techniques in Kaduna, Nigeria. The primary findings are the successful technical fabrication of the entire plant and a total capital expenditure of ₦5,597,968.00. This work provides a crucial, empirically-grounded techno-economic blueprint that demonstrates a viable, lower-cost pathway for establishing decentralised recycling facilities4. By providing an affordable and replicable technological solution, this study offers a practical tool to empower local communities, create green jobs, and accelerate Nigeria's progress towards sustainable waste management.
