| contents | <p><strong><span>ABSTRACT</span></strong></p> <p><em><span>Over 70% of spent or used engine oil by vehicles collected at the mechanic workshops eventually become a waste and end up contaminating the ground which can be harmful to the terrestrial being and when getting to the rivers it causes water pollution that kills aquatics lives. This research aims at studies on recycling the spent oil for industry application. In this research work, three (3) different brand of used engine oil were collected from different outlet (Ammasco, Vital and Conoil). The used engine oil was physically treated, the treatment include: heating, decanting and filtering. Analysis of physical properties were specific gravity, viscosity value, color measurement, total acid number, refractive index, flash point and ignition point, carried out on each of the treated used engine oil. Stop oil treatment was added at various ratios (5, 10, and 15ml) and various temperatures (29, 40, and 70OC) and same test analysis was also carried out. The results obtained were to be in range; Refractive index (1.530 - 1.689), Viscosity value (0.0016 - 0.0075Kg/ms), Specific gravity (0.848 - 0.893), Total acid number (1.9 - 7.9mgkOH/g), Colour measurement at transmitted 550 (- 01.5 - 01.0), Flash point (30 - 34.5OC) respectively. The results obtained were compared with the Standard refined used engine oil in the refinery for firing and it was found that Ammasco used engine oil after refined was having a closer value to the standard.</span></em></p> |
