- <p>The maritime industry's transition toward remote and distributed dynamic positioning operations represents a fundamental departure from established operational paradigms, yet substantial theoretical and regulatory gaps persist in understanding safety implications, governance mechanisms, and human factors integration. This paper examines three distinct operational architectures—fully onboard DP operations, hybrid onboard-shore configurations, and centralised shore-based DP cells—through comparative analysis of safety resilience characteristics, situational awareness mechanisms, and incident response patterns. Drawing on mixed-methods investigation comprising interviews with 24 DP practitioners across multiple maritime jurisdictions, systematic analysis of 127 DP-related incidents spanning 2015–2024, and regulatory document review across ten maritime administrations, findings reveal that hybrid models generate specific performance advantages in hazard recognition while centralised remote operations concentrate failure modes related to communication latency and contextual awareness limitation. The investigation identifies critical gaps within current certification frameworks, particularly regarding competency reassessment for DPOs transitioning to distributed team roles, shared responsibility protocols spanning vessel-based and shore-based personnel, and incident investigation methodologies adapted for geographically distributed decision-making environments. The paper proposes revised assurance frameworks incorporating distributed team performance assessment, enhanced cyber-resilience specifications, and modified liability attribution mechanisms. This investigation theorises remote DP operations as a distinct operational paradigm requiring fundamentally reconceived regulatory approaches rather than procedural modifications to existing onboard governance frameworks. Implications extend to technical systems specification, workforce development strategy, organizational readiness assessment, and institutional evolution requirements within maritime administrations and classification societies to legitimise remote operations for high-consequence close-proximity offshore tasks.</p>
