-
ABSTRACT

The transition to digital education has introduced three major challenges for learners: the isolation of solitary study, the fragmentation of learning resources across multiple platforms, and cognitive overload caused by excessive digital content. Traditional Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle are effective for content delivery but often fail to provide the synchronous and social engagement of physical classrooms. At the same time, third-party collaboration platforms like Discord foster community interaction but remain disconnected from the core academic workflow, leading to frequent context switching.

This paper presents the design, architecture, and implementation of Sky, a novel real-time collaborative learning platform that addresses these challenges. Sky functions as a unified ecosystem by integrating a synchronous collaborative workspace—including study groups, real-time chat, and file repositories—with AI-powered learning assistants. By embedding Google Gemini AI directly into the learning workflow, the platform enables on-demand summarization of complex PDF documents and YouTube video tutorials, effectively reducing cognitive overload.

The paper further details the system’s modern and scalable architecture, which utilizes a React.js 14 frontend, Appwrite as a Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS) for real-time data synchronization and file management, and a secure server-side implementation for handling all Generative AI (GenAI) requests. Sky transforms the solitary study experience into an interactive, efficient, and community-driven process, offering a practical proof-of-concept for the next generation of integrated educational platforms.
