contents
This preprint presents an evolutionary synthesis addressing the emergence of mammal-defining physiological integration during the Late Permian. Rather than attributing these traits to gradual optimization in open continental ecosystems, the framework proposed here emphasizes survival-driven integration under conditions of ecological constraint, including geographic fragmentation, energetic limitation, and population instability.

The paper reframes long-recognized ghost lineages among advanced therapsids as potential signals of selective consolidation occurring outside well-sampled continental basins. It develops explicit, falsifiable predictions concerning trait co-occurrence, anatomical integration, and contrasting evolutionary patterns between constrained and unconstrained assemblages.

This version (v1) presents the conceptual framework and predictions. Figures illustrating the proposed model and trait-integration patterns will be added in a subsequent version.
