  • <p><span>The rapid expansion of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) in Northern Nigeria has intensified the adoption of online instructional modes, particularly synchronous and asynchronous learning approaches. However, empirical evidence comparing the effectiveness of these two modes on learner achievement within the region remains limited. This study examined the comparative effect of synchronous and asynchronous online instruction on learner achievement in ODL institutions in Northern Nigeria. Adopting a quasi-experimental research design, the study involved undergraduate students enrolled in selected ODL programmes across three northern states. Participants were divided into two instructional groups: one exposed to synchronous online instruction through real-time virtual lectures and interactive sessions, and the other engaged in asynchronous instruction using recorded lectures, discussion forums, and self-paced learning materials. Data were collected using an achievement test developed from course content and validated by subject experts. Descriptive statistics and inferential analyses, including mean, standard deviation, and independent samples t-test, were employed to analyze the data at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed a statistically significant difference in learner achievement between students exposed to synchronous and asynchronous online instruction, with synchronous learners demonstrating higher mean achievement scores. The result suggests that real-time interaction, immediate feedback, and increased learner engagement associated with synchronous learning enhance academic performance in ODL contexts. However, asynchronous instruction was found to support learner flexibility and independent study, particularly for students facing challenges related to internet connectivity, work commitments, and geographic constraints common in Northern Nigeria. The study concludes that while synchronous instruction may yield higher achievement outcomes, a blended integration of both instructional modes could optimize learning effectiveness in ODL programmes. It therefore recommends that ODL institutions in Northern Nigeria adopt a hybrid online instructional framework and invest in digital infrastructure and staff capacity development to enhance learner achievement and educational equity.</span></p>
