  • <p><span lang="EN-US">Biofouling the undesired accumulation of microorganisms, plants, algae, and invertebrates on submerged surfaces poses significant operational, economic, and ecological challenges to the global fishing sector. Fishing vessels, nets, cages, and aquaculture equipment are highly susceptible to biofouling, which leads to increased fuel consumption, reduced fishing efficiency, product contamination, and accelerated material degradation. This article reviews the mechanisms driving biofouling, its implications for fishing and aquaculture operations, and recent technological developments in antifouling strategies. Emphasis is placed on environmentally responsible approaches such as biodegradable coatings, novel materials, and marine-friendly cleaning systems. Knowledge gaps and future research directions are also discussed to support the development of sustainable antifouling solutions for the fisheries industry.</span></p>
