| contents | <p><em><span lang="EN-GB">Technology and digitalisation have frequently been advanced as the forces of global integration that lead to the proliferation of common infrastructures, platforms, and ways of interaction across societies. Nevertheless, the results of such process are quite uneven. This essay examines whether or not technological globalisation brings convergence between countries by looking at the political economy of digitalisation. Based largely on the idea of the Network Society, the concept developed by Castells and the critical approaches to digital inequality and platform capitalism, the paper claims that convergence will be mostly on the infrastructure and technical systems level, whereas divergence continues in the fields of access, control and economic gain. Digitalisation joins societies in an overall technological infrastructure, but at the same time enhances inequality by introducing unequal power relations within the platform, data management, and a structural hierarchy of development. The paper gives a conclusion that technological globalisation does not bring uniformity but creates a stratified digital order that is defined by integration but no equality.</span></em></p> |
