| contents |
Construction Grammar is highly relevant in German language teaching because it views language not as a set of isolated rules, but as a network of meaningful form–meaning pairings (constructions). Learners therefore acquire grammatical knowledge by recognizing, understanding, and productively using typical linguistic patterns in authentic contexts. This approach promotes a functional, usage-based model of grammar instruction and supports both linguistic awareness and communicative competence.

Demonstration example (the verb “geben” – “to give”):
The verb geben is not introduced abstractly as “a verb that takes a dative and an accusative object,” but through the ditransitive construction:
“X gives Y Z” (e.g., The teacher gives the student the book).
In class, authentic example sentences are first collected; then the shared meaning of the construction (“transfer of possession”) is identified. Only afterwards are the roles of the sentence elements (agent, recipient, theme) and their case marking reflected upon. In this way, students learn the verb geben as part of a meaningful construction and can transfer the pattern to other verbs (e.g., to give, to send, to lend).

Thus, Construction Grammar connects grammatical learning with language use and facilitates sustainable, transferable learning.
|
