His death on March 24, 1946, in Estoril, Portugal, was officially declared an accident, but numerous facts and evidence point to the possibility of foul play.</p> <p>INTRODUCTION<br>For nearly eighty years—from 1946 to 2026—the circumstances of the death<br>of Alexander Alexandrovich Alekhine remained one of the darkest,<br>controversial, and distorted pages in world chess history. Despite<br>Alekhine's colossal historical significance, his final days<br>were shrouded in myth, fragmentary statements, politicized<br>interpretations, and often deliberate distortions.<br>What in a normal cultural tradition would have been the subject of a comprehensive and independent investigation, in this case, turned into a collection of poorly coherent versions, with the original documents buried under layers of later retellings and journalistic clichés.</p> <p>This work is the result of many years of systematic and rigorous scientific research, which we conducted jointly with international grandmaster<br>Evgeny Solozhenkin. For over ten years, we worked as a single research team, and although I, Sergey<br>Kolesnyak, prepared the final text in my own name, we deliberately use the word "we" here, since every significant part of the book is the product of joint intellectual and analytical work.<br>However, the central difference between our work and any previous attempts<br>is the following:<br>We conducted an international investigation, consisting of five research teams in five countries.<br>This investigation included:<br>● a team in Portugal, which worked with the Estoril archives, PIDE, forensic documents, and regional press; 9<br>● A group in the UK that studied tournament materials, FIDE decisions, and searched for two more photographs of the four sent to the Associated Press by Luis<br>Caldeira Lupi;<br>● A group in France that analyzed diplomatic and police<br>documents, press reactions, and the history of extradition requests;<br>● A group in the United States that worked in New York City archives,<br>the Manhattan Chess Club, the circles of Maurice Wertheim, Reuben Fine, and related<br>structures;<br>● A group in Russia that reconstructed the historical and political contexts of the<br>USSR, Botvinnik's correspondence, sports diplomacy documents, and Soviet<br>biographical sources.<br>The synthesis of the materials collected by these independent groups allowed us to obtain a holistic, consistent, and documented<br>picture—one that no single country had.</p> <p> </p> <p>---------------</p> <p>We create scientific works that humanity truly needs.
