contents
The Sangam Age, dating roughly from 300 BCE to 300 CE, represents a formative phase in the history of South India and the wider Indian cultural world. The Tamil literary works of this period are not merely poetic compositions but important historical sources that provide insight into early political institutions, economic systems, social organization, and religious thought. This study examines how Sangam texts reflect historical realities and how their descriptions correspond with references found in Sanskrit epics, Puranic traditions, and Buddhist and Jain literatures. By comparing literary themes with archaeological and inscriptional evidence, the paper highlights the interconnected nature of regional cultures in ancient India. The findings suggest that the Sangam tradition played a vital role in shaping a shared civilizational framework while preserving distinct southern
cultural features. Thus, Sangam literature emerges as a crucial bridge between local history and the broader narrative of ancient Indian civilization.
