•
This report examines the role, evolution, and current status of historical musicology within European Higher Music Education Institutions, henceforth referred to as HMEIs, in line with the terminology used by The Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen. HMEIs include institutions commonly referred to as conservatoires, music academies, or colleges of music. This report explores the complex institutional settings, pedagogical models, and research capabilities that characterize historical musicology in these specialised educational environments. The findings reveal considerable diversity in how historical musicology has been integrated into HMEIs programs over time, with significant variations in curriculum design, research support, and faculty qualifications across different national contexts. Historical musicology is represented in virtually all HMEIs across Europe, but with considerable variation in its conceptualisation and delivery model.
