contents
This paper presents a formal encoding system for classifying consciousness definitions for the Dey theory framework. It assigns unique numerical codes to consciousness definations based on their structural properties—specifically which of the five richness conditions (organizational structure, dynamics, multi-scale architecture, substrate dependence, phenomenal grounding) and five exclusion conditions they satisfy.

The encoding provides multiple representation formats: a basic signature code mapping to integers 0-1023, a hierarchical code capturing decision tree levels and stage properties, a compact single-integer representation (Dey Numbers) fitting in 21 bits, and human-readable string formats. All encoding and decoding operations run in constant time.

The system enables computational investigation of consciousness definition space, particularly the realizability question: which combinations of the five richness conditions can actually be satisfied simultaneously by coherent theories. While single-condition cases are proven realizable, the status of 26 multi-condition signatures remains open.

The paper includes database schemas for storing consciousness definitions, query algorithms for analyzing theory properties, distance metrics and lattice structures on signature space, and proofs connecting the encoding to Dey theory's impossibility results. It provides the computational infrastructure for systematically exploring the 1024-element signature space and determining which regions contain viable consciousness theories.
