Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Blue Economy: The Role of AI and Islamic Social Finance in South Asia

contents <p>Abstract <br>The Blue Economy provides a compelling new <br>framework for harnessing the economic <br>potential of our oceans and seas to enhance <br>economic opportunities while at the same time <br>protecting our marine resources and <br>addressing social challenges. This paper <br>expounds how integration of contemporary <br>technologies with ISF-based principles can roll <br>out this vision in the South Asian context. <br>Techniques and tools such as machine <br>learning, remote sensing and predictive <br>analytics have tremendous potential for <br>enabling marine conservation, advancing <br>fisheries management, and improving disaster <br>preparedness. Meanwhile, ISF instruments <br>including Zakat, Waqf and Sadaqah offer <br>ethical (net)interest-free possibilities that suit <br>sustainable development goals. Nonetheless, <br>while these tools have potential, there has been <br>limited attention to how technology and ISF <br>can promote the Blue Economy in this region. <br>This paper aims to: (1) investigate the <br>application of digital innovation for better <br>marine resource management; and (2) makes <br>rise-funding initiatives on the Blue Economy <br>possible with ISF, in respect to which it is <br>proposed a framework that interlinks both. <br>The research reveals encouraging possibilities. ―Ohel Zubgameh‖ showcases how technology <br>when mixed with Islamic finance models can <br>provide grounded pathways toward <br>implementing Sustainable Development Goals <br>(SDGs) and fostering the sustainable future of <br>oceans. Through the survey, we can observe <br>that participants are familiar with the concept <br>of blue economy at a moderate level and those <br>who‘s more familiar believe that technology, <br>particularly AI, could have a positive role to <br>play. Algorithms and analysis tools, such as</p> <p>  <br>ML and data analytics, are generally <br>considered useful to improve decision-making, <br>efficiency and environment effects. At the <br>same time, ISF tools are also seen as a <br>potential means to finance Blue Economy <br>projects - but there are challenges for this to <br>happen - with gaps in policies and access to <br>funding being 2 of them. We propose a <br>framework that consists of technology-driven <br>systems for marine resource management, <br>ISF-based financial models, and facilitating <br>policies to realize these ideas. This research <br>connects two fields that are usually separate, <br>technology and Islamic finance, to help <br>explore how they might work together toward <br>sustainability, economic inclusion in small <br>communities and care of the marine <br>environment across South Asia.</p>
