The EMODnet Chemistry ongoing efforts to support EU and global policies to tackle marine litter issues

| contents | The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), with its 11 descriptors and associated indicators, is a pillar of EU environmental policies. It is coordinating the efforts already available at national and regional level to evaluate the status of the environment and take actions for reaching the Good Environmental Status at EU level. The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet), with its network of organizations grouped per thematic lots, and supported by the EU's integrated maritime policy, is working to manage marine data according to international standards and make it freely available as interoperable data layers and data products. EMODnet Chemistry thematic lot has been actively working on marine litter data management at the EU level since 2016. This work is done according to the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable), with the main goal of supporting the implementation of Descriptor 10 of the MSFD. The National Oceanographic Data Centres in the EMODnet consortium work in coordination and agreement with the most relevant EU stakeholders and communities involved in this topic like the Joint Research Centre , the EU MSFD -Technical Group on Marine Litter , the Regional Sea Conventions and the Member States . The addressed topics are coastline litter (beach), seafloor litter (from trawling), floating and sediment microlitter. This data management infrastructure is based on: the definition, sharing, and continuous update of agreed and harmonized guidelines based on consolidated best practices, where available; a strong, interactive and efficient pre-ingestion data validation workflow to ensure data quality; ad-hoc post-ingestion quality controls like data-products generation providing additional quality check on data and highlighting relevant data features. The close collaboration with expert communities and stakeholders at EU and global level helps to improve the quality and comparability of data through iterative comparisons and feedback mechanisms.
