It is locally abundant and often the most common Greigia species within its elevational range of 2600–3720 m. The species is ecologically plastic, occurring both in the understory of montane forests, where it grows as a solitary plant reaching up to 1.8 m tall (Fig. 11A), and in open páramo grasslands, where it forms dense cushions of multiple individuals (Fig. 11B).

Etymology: —The specific epithet honors the Muysca (also spelled Muisca) civilization, whose ancestral territory and cultural landscape encompass the geographic distribution of the species. In the Muysc cubun language, muysca means “person” or “people,” serving as both a singular and plural term (Gómez-Aldana, 2025).

Conservation status: — Greigia muysca is endemic to the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, where it is relatively common across forested subpáramo, páramo shrubland, and open páramo ecosystems. The species is currently known from a substantial number of subpopulations, and its distribution is likely underestimated, with the potential to occur in additional suitable habitats throughout the cordillera. Although several areas where the species occurs are subject to anthropogenic pressures, including grazing, agriculture, and land-use change, G. muysca appears tolerant of lowintensity disturbance, particularly where the native forest matrix remains. Several subpopulations are located within formally protected areas, contributing to the stability of the species in parts of its range.

The species has an estimated Extent of Occurrence (EOO) of 14,740 km ² and an Area of Occupancy (AOO) of 128 km ². While the AOO is below the threshold for threatened categories under Criterion B, Greigia muysca is known from more than 20 locations and there is currently no evidence of continuing population decline or severe fragmentation. For these reasons, the species does not meet the criteria for listing as threatened. However, given the restricted habitat specificity, ongoing land-use pressures in parts of its range, and a relatively small AOO, G. muysca is close to qualifying for Vulnerable and is therefore assessed as Near Threatened (NT).

Additional specimens examined:— COLOMBIA.
