- <p><span lang="CA">This essay provides an in-depth examination of my doctoral research. It analyses Christian polemics against ritual dances that, as late as the sixth century, were still performed by Christians to honour God and the saints within sacred spaces, as attested by Caesarius of Arles. The Bishop of Arles condemned these choreutic practices as pagan and obscene, and above all as competing with the liturgy officially authorised within churches. His critique reflects the broader efforts of the ecclesiastical hierarchy to restrain devotional customs that threatened to undermine the Church’s authority as the institution responsible for regulating sacred spaces and mediating between human communities, God, the martyrs, and the afterlife.</span></p>
