Innovative Approaches to Maternal Healthcare Delivery in Mozambique: An Original Research Study

| contents | <p>Maternal healthcare delivery in sub-Saharan Africa contends with substantial challenges, including resource limitations and geographical barriers. Mozambique's high maternal mortality ratio underscores the necessity for innovative service delivery models in medicine. This study aimed to identify and evaluate innovative approaches to maternal healthcare delivery in Mozambique. Its primary objective was to assess their perceived effectiveness, scalability, and sustainability from the perspective of healthcare providers and programme managers. A mixed-methods, multi-site case study design was employed. Data were collected via in-depth interviews with key informants, focus group discussions with community health workers, and a review of programme documentation and health facility metrics. Thematic analysis was used for qualitative data, supported by descriptive statistics. Three dominant innovative models were identified: integrated mobile clinics, community-based task-shifting initiatives, and a digital health platform for emergency referral coordination. Programmes incorporating community health workers reported a perceived increase in antenatal care coverage, with approximately 70% of interviewees citing improved early pregnancy registration in their catchment areas. Innovation in maternal healthcare delivery in Mozambique is characterised by pragmatic adaptations to systemic constraints, with a focus on community integration and technological facilitation. These approaches show potential for improving service access. Future initiatives should prioritise sustainable funding for community health worker programmes and invest in robust digital infrastructure.
