| contents | <p><span lang="EN-US">Passive constructions constitute a key grammatical phenomenon that reflects how speakers conceptualize events and organize information in discourse. The passive voice foregrounds the action or affected participant while backgrounding or omitting the agent, thus fulfilling important syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic functions. This thesis presents a contrastive analysis of passive constructions in English and Uzbek, focusing on their structural patterns, functional features, and discourse-pragmatic roles. English expresses passivity mainly through auxiliary verbs and participial forms, whereas Uzbek employs morphological markers and derivational affixes. The study identifies similarities and differences in form, frequency, stylistic value, and communicative purpose, showing that despite shared functions, passive constructions in the two languages differ significantly due to typological and structural factors.</span></p> |
