| contents |
This seminar introduces Transcendence as a VIA virtue that helps students and leaders connect to meaning, hope, and perspective beyond immediate pressure and circumstance. Participants explore how transcendence-related strengths support resilience, optimism, life satisfaction, and meaning-making in demanding learning environments, especially during uncertainty, disappointment, comparison, or sustained effort without immediate reward. The session focuses on the five VIA transcendence strengths—Appreciation of Beauty & Excellence, Gratitude, Hope, Humour, and Spirituality—and shows how each can be cultivated in grounded, reality-aligned ways that support academic engagement and wellbeing. Emphasis is placed on optimal use of these strengths, including recognising patterns of underuse (e.g., cynicism, hopelessness, narrow focus) and overuse (e.g., bypassing, denial, disengagement from responsibility). The seminar equips participants with practical ways to notice, evoke, and model transcendence in student life and leadership contexts without minimising difficulty.

Learning outcomes for participants

By the end of this session, participants should be able to:

Explain transcendence as a VIA character capacity that supports meaning, hope, and perspective during challenge.

Identify student moments where broader perspective is more helpful than additional advice, urgency, or strategy.

Name and distinguish the five transcendence strengths and recognise how they show up (or go missing) in academic and leadership contexts.

Describe how appreciation of excellence, gratitude, hope, humour, and spirituality can support persistence, wellbeing, and motivation under pressure.

Apply the principle of optimal use by spotting underuse and overuse patterns and choosing responses that stay grounded, responsible, and psychologically constructive.

|
