contents
The unified payment system for higher and lower denominations improves financial
inclusiveness across large, small and medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). This paper was guided
by the need to investigate the compatibility of current technology and enablers for a Financial
Unified Payment System (FUPS) interface in Botswana. The investigation was guided by two
basic objectives, namely (1) to identify factors leading to the adoption of a unified payment system
and (2) to explore the compatibility of the current technology. The two objectives lead to the 3rd
objective of providing recommendations.
The secondary data findings revealed that current payment systems in Botswana are
compatible and interoperable. There are technical, operational, regulatory and user compatibility
considerations. Botswana uses the same technological payment systems used globally, which
makes the unified payment systems highly possible. However, a major limitation is the limited
internet in rural areas as compared to urban areas. The proliferation of digital payment systems
reflects the integrability and interoperability of the unified payment system in Botswana. The
payment systems and applications include a wide range of electronic mechanisms such as the
online banking platforms, mobile money payments and peer-to-peer transactions.
