| contents |
The mangrove ecosystem is rich in specialized metabolites that may have pharmacological applications, but the chemical diversity and antioxidant properties of West African mangrove species remain poorly documented. This article reports the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of aqueous and hydroethanolic leaf extracts from Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa, and Conocarpus erectus collected in the Sine Saloum Delta Biosphere Reserve (Senegal). Metabolic profiling was performed using Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS), combined with Feature-Based Molecular Networking (FBMN) for metabolite annotation. Antioxidant activity was assessed by DPPH and ABTS assays (offline and online), and total phenolic content (TPC) was measured using the Folin–Ciocalteu method. A total of 153 metabolites were annotated, mainly belonging to phenolic acids, flavonoids and hydrolysable tannins. L. racemosa and C. erectus exhibited the highest TPC and antioxidant activity, while A. germinans showed low activity. ABTS/DPPH on-line screening identified key antioxidant compounds such as ellagic acid, myricetin, quercetin glycosides and rutin. This integrative metabolomic approach highlights the chemical richness and antioxidant potential of L. racemosa and C. erectus, positioning them as promising sources of natural antioxidants.
|
