| contents | <p>AstroBurst is an open-source, cross-platform desktop application for processing, analyzing, and visualizing astronomical FITS images. It is the first astronomical image processor built entirely on the Rust/Tauri/WebGPU stack, delivering near-native performance with a fraction of the memory footprint of legacy tools such as PixInsight or Siril. The application implements a complete astrophotography pipeline: FITS I/O with memory-mapped extraction, bias/dark/flat calibration, sigma-clipped stacking with iterative rejection, drizzle integration (Variable-Pixel Linear Reconstruction) with Square/Gaussian/Lanczos3 kernels, RGB composition with automatic Hubble palette detection (Hα/[OIII]/[SII]), and FITS export with full WCS metadata preservation. Key algorithms include the Midtone Transfer Function (MTF) for Screen Transfer Function (STF) stretching, arcsinh normalization for astronomically-correct flux ratio preservation, phase correlation-based frame alignment, PSF-fitting star detection with centroid computation (flux, FWHM, SNR), 2D FFT power spectrum analysis, and World Coordinate System (WCS) transforms using the CD matrix formulation with TAN projection. The architecture follows a strict separation between a Rust backend (35 Tauri IPC commands across 8 modules) and a React/TypeScript frontend. Heavy computation is parallelized via Rayon across all CPU cores, while real-time visualization leverages WebGPU compute shaders for GPU-accelerated STF rendering with Canvas 2D fallback. Binary pixel data is transferred via zero-copy IPC, eliminating JSON/base64 serialization overhead. AstroBurst targets two user segments: professional astronomers working with observatory data (JWST, HST, ground-based IFU instruments) and advanced astrophotographers processing deep-sky narrowband and broadband imaging data. The repository includes sample HST/WFPC2 narrowband FITS images (502nm [OIII], 656nm Hα, 673nm [SII]) from the Eagle Nebula region for testing and reproducibility.</p> |
