contents <p>Abstract<br>Pharmacognosy plays a crucial role in the discovery, authentication, and quality assurance of medicinal plants used in traditional and modern therapeutics. Comprehensive pharmacognostic evaluation involves botanical authentication, physicochemical and phytochemical characterization, quality control testing, standardization procedures, and bioactive compound profiling. Authentication ensures the correct identification of plant species and prevents adulteration, which is a major challenge in herbal drug production. Quality control measures, including macroscopic, microscopic, physicochemical, and chromatographic analyses, help ensure consistency, purity, and safety of herbal materials. Standardization focuses on establishing reproducible parameters for active constituents, dosage, and efficacy. Advances in analytical technologies such as chromatography, spectroscopy, metabolomics, and molecular biology have significantly improved the detection and quantification of bioactive compounds. Such approaches enhance the reliability, safety, and therapeutic effectiveness of herbal medicines while supporting regulatory compliance and global acceptance. This review highlights key aspects of pharmacognostic evaluation, emphasizing authentication, quality control, standardization, and bioactive compound analysis as essential components for the scientific validation and sustainable utilization of medicinal plants.</p>
