| contents |
Methanisation of pig farm slurry has been well documented in the literature for many years. Scraping systems can collect slurry
several times per day, but they can be installed only in new buildings, and they separate the solid and liquid fractions of slurry. Some
robots currently on the market can collect slurry daily and can be installed in existing buildings. This study investigated the influence of
robotic slurry collection on slurry’s methane-production potential. The objective was to compare the amount of methane produced by
slurry collected by a robot versus that of slurry collected traditionally and stored for extended periods. Two rooms were monitored:
one with a traditional slurry storage system (control) and the other equipped with a robotic collector (robot). The robot collected
slurry several times per day and separated the solid and liquid fractions. The robot system collected a similar volume of slurry as the
traditional system. However, the robot system collected fresher slurry, leading it to have 50% higher methane-production potential
than the stored slurry. The solid fraction separated by the robot had a significantly higher methane-production potential than the
fresh slurry, indicating concentrated organic matter. Overall, the results of this study suggest that robot slurry collection can help
increase the sustainability of pig production by increasing the potential of methane production from slurry.
|
