| contents |
Smart nets represent a significant technological advancement in modern fishing gear through the integration of digital technologies such as sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and real-time data analytics into traditionally passive fishing systems. These innovations enable fishing nets to actively monitor underwater conditions, identify species composition in real time, and support selective harvesting during fishing operations. Embedded sensors provide continuous information on net geometry, environmental parameters, and catch behavior, while AI-based image recognition systems facilitate the identification and release of non-target or juvenile species, thereby reducing bycatch and discards. Smart trawl systems further enhance operational efficiency by dynamically adjusting gear performance in response to live data, improving fuel efficiency and minimizing seabed impact. Digital connectivity through IoT platforms also enables gear tracking, reduces ghost fishing, and enhances compliance with fisheries management regulations. Although challenges such as high initial investment and technical complexity remain, smart nets offer a promising pathway toward sustainable, efficient, and ecosystem-based fisheries management.
|
