- <p><em><span>The first civilised race to appear in the world was the Tamil race. The Tamil civilisation is still admired and followed by many people. They lived with love and bravery as their two eyes in the Sangam times. The literature speaks of many volumes about the lives of the ancient Tamil people and the knowledge they had. It is astonishing to think the love life (Agam) and the life value system they devised for them. In the Sangam literature, Tamil social identities are varied and the characters have a place at various levels. In the Sangam literature, the creator is completely anonymous and the characters express the joys and sorrows of their inner lives (Agam) through narration. Parathamai is considered as one of the immoral ones among the Sangam people. At the times, harlots also existed. They are called as ‘Parathai’ in Tamil. They are excluded from society for their immoral behavior and unstable character. Their appearance and actions have been portrayed as uneducated and immoral nature by the patriarchal social system. A female community excluded from the limitations of the chastity doctrine constructed by the society was identified as ‘Parathaiar’. Hence, the study presents the assessment of the oppressed female community by examining the life of Parathaiar in Sangam literature</span></em></p>
