| contents | <p>We propose a naturalistic framework for consciousness formulated within the me-</p> <p>chanics of active inference, without accepting that any minimization of free energy</p> <p>suces to produce sentience. Consciousness is dened as a self-localized variational</p> <p>consensus: an episode during which four partial viewsquality, value, policy, and</p> <p>perspectiveconverge on a shared episode latent z<span>t </span>under meta-control and re-</p> <p>source constraint. Alignment is formalized as a consensus divergence between partial</p> <p>posteriors q<span>i</span>(z<span>t</span>) and an aggregated posterior q<span>∗</span>(z<span>t</span>), weighted by A<span>t </span>and m<span>t</span>. We</p> <p>further distinguish an internal consensus χ<span>int </span>from an external calibration χ<span>ext</span>: the</p> <p>former measures agreement between views, the latter the agreement of the episode</p> <p>with observations. This dissociation accounts, within a single grammar, for normal</p> <p>wakefulness, dreaming, hallucination, depersonalization, and sedation. To prevent</p> <p>panpsychist readings of active inference, we impose an explicit architectural con-</p> <p>straint: shared episode latent, self-localization, endogenous triage, temporal depth,</p> <p>meta-control, and genuine persistence. We derive falsiable predictions concern-</p> <p>ing presence/friction dissociations, no-report paradigms, propofol sedation, delayed</p> <p>agency, and auditory hallucinations. The ambition is direct: to dissolve the hard</p> <p>problem by showing that the supposed residue is merely a mechanistic structure</p> <p>that remains under-specied. Formally.</p> |
