contents
This report presents cognitive entropy as a conceptual framework for analysing the expanding uncertainty that arises when intelligence advances faster than humanity’s ability to predict, interpret, and govern the next frontier of cognition. The framework argues that increasing intelligence does not necessarily produce a more stable or legible map of future knowledge; rather, it may enlarge the space of possible breakthroughs while simultaneously reducing confidence in which domains of cognition will become most consequential.

The note develops cognitive entropy across four principal dimensions: directional uncertainty, concerning which domain of cognition will expand next; significance uncertainty, concerning the value and consequences of that expansion; selection uncertainty, concerning whether accelerated cognition will favour what is most beneficial to humanity or merely what is most optimisable, strategic, or economically valuable; and comprehension uncertainty, concerning the widening gap between usable intelligence and meaningful human understanding.

Positioned at the intersection of the philosophy of artificial intelligence, epistemology, and anthropological human evolution, this work proposes cognitive entropy as a term for the condition in which intelligence expands while the future structure of knowledge becomes less predictable. It is intended as an initial formal articulation of the concept and as a basis for further interdisciplinary development.
