contents
In the Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, there are many inductive-loop installations to count vehicles. The experience with these installations indicates that they are very reliable and could be easily modified to classify vehicles. With the objective of having
low-cost, long life and low exposure to vandalism vehicle classifiers it was decided to develop classifiers with inductive-loops as sensors. The development’s steps and the results of an instrument installed in a highway are presented in this work.
The magnetic signatures that the vehicles produce on the inductive-loops already installed were evaluated during the project. This study allowed developing an innovative classifier which uses the estimates of the distance between the pavement and the
vehicles to improve the classification. This upgrading enables to reliable classify four categories: cars and pickups; vans; buses; and trucks with trailers and semi trailers.
