Dataset Structure</p> <p>The dataset is organised into folders according to the coordinate reference<br>system used.</p> <p>• 1.1_Geodata_wgs84<br> Contains the geospatial layers stored in the WGS84 geographic<br> coordinate system.</p> <p>• 1.2_Geodata_etrs89<br> Contains the same geospatial layers provided in the ETRS89<br> coordinate reference system.</p> <p>Both folders contain identical geospatial layers differing only in the<br>coordinate reference system.</p> <p>Each folder includes the following layers:</p> <p>• Baetic_system<br> Polygon layer representing the spatial boundaries of the Baetic System.</p> <p>• Tectonic_discontinuities<br> Line layer representing major tectonic discontinuities associated with<br> the Baetic System.</p> <p>• Baetic_system_envelope<br> Rectangular polygon envelope covering the spatial extent of the<br> Baetic System layer.</p> <p>Within each folder the layers are provided in two formats:</p> <p>• Shapefile (.shp, .dbf, .shx, .prj, etc.)<br>• GeoPackage (.gpkg)</p> <p>The folder "0_Source" contains the original reference material used for<br>the compilation of the dataset.</p> <p><br>3. Data Processing</p> <p>The Baetic System boundaries were extracted from the geological regions<br>map of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands from the Atlas<br>Nacional de España (Instituto Geográfico Nacional). During the<br>digitisation process, special care was taken to preserve the geometry of<br>the original cartographic source as faithfully as possible.</p> <p>The Baetic System polygons were obtained by extracting the corresponding<br>geological region from the complete map. Unnecessary elements from the<br>original dataset were removed in order to simplify the layer and reduce<br>file size. Only the minimum set of attribute fields required for the<br>dataset was retained.</p> <p>The layer "Tectonic_discontinuities" was derived from the same geological<br>reference sources and represents major tectonic discontinuities<br>associated with the Baetic System.</p> <p>The layer "Baetic_system_envelope" was generated using the tool<br>"Minimum Bounding Geometry (Data Management)" in ArcGIS Pro,<br>producing a rectangular polygon representing the spatial extent<br>of the Baetic System layer.</p> <p>All digitisation, editing and geoprocessing tasks were carried out<br>in a GIS environment.</p> <p><br>6.1 Terminology</p> <p>The term "Baetic System" is used throughout this dataset to refer to<br>the mountain system commonly known as the Baetic or Betic Cordillera.<br>This terminology follows the usage adopted in:</p> <p>Tapiador, F.
