contents <p>This article examines the career and creative legacy of Japanese video game producer and designer <strong>Kōji Igarashi</strong>, widely known as “IGA”, one of the key figures behind the modern identity of the <em>Castlevania</em> franchise. The text explores his early career at Konami, his contributions to landmark titles such as <em>Castlevania: Symphony of the Night</em>, and his influence in shaping the so-called “Metroidvania” style of game design.</p> <p>The article also discusses the development of several <em>Castlevania</em> titles across multiple platforms, including Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and home consoles, as well as Igarashi’s collaborations with notable artists and composers such as Ayami Kojima and Michiru Yamane. Particular attention is given to the aesthetic, musical, and gameplay innovations introduced during the period often considered the “IGA era” of the franchise.</p> <p>Finally, the article addresses Igarashi’s departure from Konami and the creation of <em>Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night</em>, a crowdfunded project widely regarded as a spiritual successor to his <em>Castlevania</em> works.</p> <p>Originally published in Spanish in 2016 <a href="https://cooljapan.es/japoneses-en-videojuegos-koji-igarashi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">on CoolJapan.es</a>, this article forms part of a series dedicated to influential Japanese creators in the global video game industry.</p>
