contents

[Abstract]
This study investigates the influence of the unique geological environment of a
volcanic island on the formation of the material culture of the ancient state of U
san-guk, focusing on the ‘Hyeonpo Seokin’ (Stone Statue) reportedly excavated fr
om the Hyeonpo-ri tomb complex on Ulleungdo Island. The Hyeonpo Seokin, a stone an
thropomorphic figure crafted from alkali basalt, represents a technical choice and
symbolic sublimation by the inhabitants of Usan-guk to overcome environmental cons
traints, such as barren volcanic soil and the absence of clay resources.
This paper analyzes how the physical properties of basalt—namely its high hardne
ss and coarse texture—led to the formal simplification and spiritual intensificati
on of the artifact. These characteristics are further examined through a comparati
ve analysis with Silla clay figurines (Towu) and Jeju Island’s Dolhareubang. The
findings suggest that the Hyeonpo Seokin exhibits a 'convergent formative style un
ique to volcanic islands,' distinct from mainland funerary objects, and embodies a
shamanistic worldview praying for the peace and regeneration of the soul in the af
terlife. By reinterpreting the Hyeonpo Seokin as a product of geo-environmental ad
aptation rather than a mere sculpture, this study aims to expand the scope of anci
ent Korean stone funerary culture to include the maritime domain.
