•
Occlusion, the way the upper and lower teeth come together, plays a central role in maintaining oral health, aesthetics, and function. Its evaluation is crucial for understanding normal development, diagnosing malocclusion, and planning orthodontic or prosthodontic treatments. This paper explores the comprehensive process of occlusal development from infancy through adulthood, including the role of primary, mixed, and permanent dentition stages. It examines how craniofacial growth patterns, dental eruption sequences, and environmental influences such as oral habits, nutrition, and muscle dynamics affect the formation of occlusion. Additionally, the importance of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) health and its relationship with occlusal stability is analyzed. Through a detailed review of occlusal characteristics, including class relationships, dental arch formation, and eruption chronology, this work highlights the significance of early diagnosis and timely intervention. The study reinforces that ideal occlusion is not only a matter of alignment but also of functional harmony between hard and soft tissues, and that any deviation may impact chewing, speech, and overall well-being.
