- <p>Cette traduction du <strong>Vafþrúðnismál</strong> ou « Les Paroles de Vafþrúðnir », poème sapiential et cosmologique de l’<strong>Edda poétique</strong>, s’appuie sur l’édition du philologue islandais <strong>Guðni Jónsson</strong>, reconnue pour la rigueur de son établissement critique et pour sa fidélité aux manuscrits médiévaux conservés notamment dans le <strong>Codex Regius</strong> (GKS 2365 4to). Ce poème met en scène un échange de questions et de réponses entre <strong>Óðinn</strong> et le géant <strong>Vafþrúðnir</strong>, chacun éprouvant la sagesse de l’autre dans une joute intellectuelle dont l’enjeu est la connaissance du cosmos, de l’origine des êtres et du destin du monde.</p> <p>Par sa structure dialogique et son contenu hautement mythologique, le <em>Vafþrúðnismál</em> constitue l’un des témoignages les plus riches de la cosmologie nordique ancienne. Les questions portent successivement sur la création du monde, la nature des astres, l’organisation des différents royaumes, ainsi que sur les événements eschatologiques liés au <strong>Ragnarǫk</strong>. À travers cet affrontement de savoirs, la tradition éd­dique met en valeur la figure d’Óðinn comme détenteur ultime de la connaissance, capable de dépasser même la sagesse des géants, réputés pour leur science antique.</p> <p>This translation of the <strong>Vafþrúðnismál</strong>, or “The Sayings of Vafþrúðnir,” a cosmological and wisdom poem of the <strong>Poetic Edda</strong>, is based on the edition of the Icelandic philologist <strong>Guðni Jónsson</strong>, widely recognized for the rigor of its critical establishment and its fidelity to the medieval manuscripts, particularly the <strong>Codex Regius</strong> (GKS 2365 4to). The poem presents a contest of knowledge between <strong>Óðinn</strong> and the giant <strong>Vafþrúðnir</strong>, each testing the other through a series of questions and answers whose subject is the deepest knowledge of the cosmos, the origins of beings, and the destiny of the world.</p> <p>Through its dialogical structure and richly mythological content, the <em>Vafþrúðnismál</em> stands as one of the most significant sources for the study of ancient Norse cosmology. The exchange successively addresses the creation of the world, the nature of the celestial bodies, the structure of the various realms, and the eschatological events associated with <strong>Ragnarǫk</strong>. Within this intellectual contest, the eddic tradition ultimately affirms the supremacy of <strong>Óðinn</strong>, whose knowledge surpasses even that of the giants, long reputed for their primordial wisdom.</p>
