| contents | <p>Digital divide dynamics in rural African communities have been a subject of increasing interest in recent years, particularly as digital technologies continue to play a pivotal role in socio-economic development. The research employs a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews in three distinct regions: Western Kenya, Eastern Kenya, and Central Kenya. Data collection tools include questionnaires and semi-structured interviews designed to gather detailed insights into community perceptions and usage patterns of digital technologies. In the surveyed communities, there is a notable disparity in internet access rates between urban centers and rural areas, with some regions experiencing less than 20% coverage. This gap correlates strongly with socio-economic factors such as income levels and educational attainment. The findings suggest that while digital technologies offer significant opportunities for economic empowerment, the existing digital divide hinders equitable access across different regions in Kenya. This exacerbates existing inequalities and perpetuates rural poverty. Given these insights, it is recommended that policy makers prioritise infrastructure development projects aimed at bridging the digital gap, alongside targeted interventions to enhance digital literacy and awareness among rural populations.</p> |
