| contents | <p><b><i>Afrotrix dejagerae</i> sp. nov.</b></p><p>Figs 1B, 2B, 7D–F, 9</p><p><b>Type material.</b> Holotype ♀: <b>SOUTH AFRICA:</b> <i>Northern Cape</i>: Augrabies NP, Riemvasmaak, 28°35'S, 20°20'E, 11.V.1995, leg. M. de Jager (by hand, soil surface) (NCA 95/271).</p><p>Paratypes: <b>SOUTH AFRICA:</b> <i>Northern Cape</i>: same data as holotype but 10.V.1995, 3♀, with 2 non-type imm. (NCA 95/287); Witdraai, 26°56'S, 20°43'E, 4.VII.1986, leg. C. Pieterse (under bark and stones), 1♀, together with 1 non-type imm. and 1 imm. <i>Asemesthes</i> sp. (Gnaphosidae) (NMBA 1500); same data as previous, 1♂ 2♀, together with 9 non-type imm. (NMBA 1485).</p><p><b>Etymology.</b> The species is named after the late Marie de Jager (Middelburg, South Africa), who made valuable collections of spiders in the South African Karoo.</p><p><b>Diagnosis.</b> The female of this species can be easily distinguished from congeners by the anterior hood located inside the atrium (AT) (Fig. 7D–F; <i>vs</i> hood absent or located on anterior margin of AT) and the AT only rebordered laterally (<i>vs</i> not rebordered or rebordered anteriorly and posteriorly). Males can be easily distinguished from all congeners by the three branches of the conductor (CON) all being short (Fig. 9) and by the presence of a dorsal spine on the palpal femur.</p><p><b>Female (holotype, NCA 95/271).</b> Measurements: CL 2.40, CW 1.85; AL 2.98, AW 1.98; TL 5.05 (4.20–6.25, ¯x = 5.22, <i>n</i> = 7); FL 0.30; SL 1.21, SW 1.08; AME–AME 0.03, AME–ALE 0.02, ALE–ALE 0.21, PME–PME 0.09, PME–PLE 0.06, PLE–PLE 0.33; MOQ: AW 0.30, PW 0.31, L 0.33; AERW 0.43, PERW 0.52. Length of leg segments: I 1.93, 0.80, 1.50, 1.72, 1.10 = 7.05; II 1.88, 0.78, 1.30, 1.62, 0.98 = 6.56; III 2.01, 0.74, 1.36, 1.93, 0.98 = 7.02; IV 2.70, 0.86, 2.00, 2.82, 1.05 = 9.43. Palp: 0.75, 0.36, 0.48, /, 0.86 = 2.45.</p><p>Habitus as in Fig. 1B. Carapace yellow, with pair of mottled black mediolateral stripes from PLE to posterior slope, enclosing oval yellow patches directed towards palps and coxae I–IV; margins without markings, pleural area with black mottling; clypeus height 1.69× AME diameter at AME, equal to ALE diameter at ALE; AME larger than ALE; AME separated by 0.24× their diameter, from ALE by 0.13× AME diameter; PLE slightly larger than PME; PME separated by 0.73× their diameter; PME separated from PLE by 0.48× PME diameter. Chelicerae pale yellow-brown; endites yellow, white on mesodistal corners; labium dark brown, white distally. Sternum creamy-yellow, with faint black mottled stripes around lateral margins. Abdomen cream dorsally, with mottled black spots over entire dorsum; four pairs of white spots either side of midline, anterior pair elongate, from anterior to 1/3 abdomen length, 2nd pair anterior to midpoint, 3rd and 4th pairs located in posterior half, each flanked laterally by black C-shaped marking; white median stripe from 3/5 abdomen length to above spinnerets; sides cream, with scattered small black spots; venter white, with scattered black spots laterally. Legs yellow, metatarsi and tarsi yellow-brown; coxae and trochanters with ventral black ring distally; all femora with four mottled black bands, proximal, distal, and either side of midpoint, proximal bands only present ventrally, others complete; all patellae with narrow proximal and distal rings dorsally and mottled black median band, absent ventrally; all tibiae with broad mottled bands at 1/3 their length and distally; tarsi only with faint mottling.</p><p>Epigyne as in Fig. 7D–F. Plate 1.7× wider than long; AT transversally oval, 2× wider than long, rebordered only laterally; AH located inside atrium and rectangular depression located posteriorly from AH; anterior and posterior parts of ST I subequal in size; ST II weakly sclerotized, directed antero-laterally.</p><p><b>Male (paratype, NMBA 1485).</b> Measurements: CL 2.23, CW 1.65; AL 2.43, AW 1.38; TL 4.75; FL 0.41; SL 1.13, SW 1.02; AME–AME 0.02, AME–ALE 0.02, ALE–ALE 0.17, PME–PME 0.06, PME–PLE 0.03, PLE–PLE 0.28; MOQ: AW 0.26, PW 0.27, L 0.30; AERW 0.38, PERW 0.46. Length of leg segments: I 2.12, 0.68, 1.72, 2.15, 1.35 = 8.02; II 2.14, 0.69, 1.64, 2.10, 1.25 = 7.82; III 2.18, 0.63, 1.70, 2.48, 1.20 = 8.19; IV 2.90, 0.78, 2.35, 3.48, 1.60 = 11.11. Palp: 0.74, 0.34, 0.12, /, 0.92 = 2.12.</p><p>Habitus as in Fig. 2B. Similar to female except the following: carapace and legs bright yellow, mediolateral carapace markings and bands on legs somewhat faded, except for ventral markings on femora. Abdomen white dorsally, with creamy-grey heart mark flanked by black splotches; three pairs of black spots in posterior half, black streaks along sides. Venter cream with scattered white spots.</p><p>Palp as in Fig. 9. Femur yellow, remaining segments brown; femur thick, 3.2× longer than wide, FA simple small distal tooth; patella with vPA wider than dPA; tibia>2× wider than long; CY 1.6× longer than wide; CON slightly>0.5× the length of CY, prolateral branch short, toothlike, ventral branch broad, subtriangular, retrolateral branch slightly curved dorsally; EM originates at ca. 09:30.</p><p><b>Distribution.</b> Only known from two localities in the north-central parts of the Northern Cape (Fig. 17B).</p> |
