contents
10. Proctolabus songi sp. nov. Mariño-Pérez & Sanabria-Urbán.

DIAGNOSIS AND MORPHOLOGICAL AFFINITIES: Males of this species are distinguished from other Proctolabus species by their medium size, cerci shape and unique ventral valves of endophallus shape (figs. 13 and 33E). This species is very similar in general morphology, and cerci with P. brachypterus and P. cantralli but the length of dorsal valves and shape of ventral ones are used to separate them apart.

SPECIES DESCRIPTION: Coloration and general morphology (figs. 2G–H and 13): Black head and reddish pronotum with a lateral light stripe running from the antennae sockets through the posterior border of pronotum. From dorsal view, head with two yellow stripes running from the yes to the anterior border of pronotum. Antennae shorter than head, pronotum and tegmina together. Tegmina. Almost fully winged, homogeneous in color, reaching two thirds of the hind femur. Legs. Fore and middle legs greenish. Hind legs with greenish femur with reddish knee and red tibia and tarsomeres. Female without that coloration pattern, brownish in general and with tegmina brachypterous, reaching only half of the hind femur. Slightly larger and stouter than male.

Male terminalia: Cerci stout with the apical tip curved inward. From dorsal view with two internal projections pointing (fig. 33E).

Female terminalia: Ventral and dorsal valves long, of similar size being the dorsal ones stouter.

Male genitalia (figs. 13E–F, 31J, 33E): Epiphallus small, well sclerotized, bridge straight; ancorae compact, triangular, and slightly curved inwards; anterior projections short and with rounded apices; posterior projections elongated and curved outwards semi triangular with rounded border; lophi prominent and developed posteriorly with internal tooth with rounded tips and more sclerotized (fig. 31J). Ectophallus zygoma rounded with large posterior projection; ramus slightly developed; apodemes of cingulum well developed; sheath of aedeagus well developed and covering basal part of the valves of endophallus. Endophallus with dorsal valves shorter than ventral ones. Dorsal valves thin and with pointed tip. Ventral valves tongue-shaped from dorsal view and almost rectangular from lateral view (fig. 13E–F). Additional details of both valves from dorsal, lateral, ventral or quasi ventral view are shown in figure 33E.

TYPE MATERIAL: Holotype male (fig. 13A, C): Mexico, Nayarit, 7 mi. W. Ixtlan del Rio, 22-XI-1958, 1024 masl, 21.052006° N, - 104.45378° W, T. J. Cohn (UMMZ).

ADDITIONAL TYPE MATERIAL: Allotype female (fig. 13B, D) and 3 paratypes (2♂ and 1♀) form: Mexico, Nayarit, 19 SE. Tepic (15 rd. mi. NW. Santa Isabel), 22-XI-1958, 1177 masl, 21.331514° N, - 104.675868° W, T. J. Cohn (UMMZ). 4 paratypes (1 ♂ and 3♀) from: Mexico, Jalisco, Volcán Tequila, 5-X-2013, 1237 masl, 20.86984866° N, - 103.8434338° W, Sanabria-Urban & Rivera-Ortiz F. (CAFESI).

DISTRIBUTION, HABITAT AND TEMPORAL OCCURRENCE (fig. 3B): This species was collected from three geographically proximate sites (<100 Km apart) spanning the western Transmexican Volcanic Belt in the states of Nayarit to Jalisco, at elevation ranging from 1000 to 1300 masl. Specimens were found during the fall (October to November) in forbs and shrubs of ruderal sites surrounded by deciduous tropical forest and Oak-Pine Forest.

MEASUREMENTS: Holotype: Tegmen, 13.0. Pronotum, 4.5. Hind femur, 12.5. Allotype: Tegmen, 12.0. Pronotum, 6.0, Hind femur, 14.0.

ETYMOLOGY: The specific epithet is a patronym in honor of Hojun Song, a friend, colleague and mentor. His contributions to Orthoptera phylogeny are considered the most comprehensive up to date.
