Tan Y.Y. <i>et al.</i>, April 13, 2025.</p><p><b>Description.</b> D1 VI; D2 I,11; A I,13; P 16; LS 24–25; TRB 5; PDS 0. Head depressed; snout rounded. Mouth terminal, oblique, lower lip and chin tip anteriormost; jaw reaching back to below midorbital. Head pores present; sensory papillae in longitudinal pattern. Body slender, rounded anteriorly, more compressed posteriorly. Predorsal area naked; cheek and opercle naked. Prepectoral area, prepelvic area and belly covered with cycloid scales; body scales ctenoid to behind pectoral fin. First dorsal fin rounded, third spine longest; second dorsal fin high, rounded posteriorly; anal fin low, rounded posteriorly; pectoral fin oval; pelvic fin oval; caudal fin rounded. Head and body pale yellowish to pale brown; cheek with minute black spots, less on opercle; trunk covered in minute brown spots entirely, five brown diffuse spots along midline accompanied with line and speckling dorsally; first dorsal fin bright orange with minute black spots, single inframarginal translucent band and translucent margin in male, translucent with minute elongated black spots in female, both sexes with single black blotch between fifth and sixth spines; second dorsal fin bright orange with minute black spots, inframarginal bands translucent at middle and fin base, translucent margin in male, pale yellow to translucent with minute black spots along fin membrane in female; anal fin black with translucent margin in male, translucent with minute black spots in female; pectoral fin translucent, dark brown fin base in male, translucent and relatively unpatterned in female; pelvic fin dark grey with white margin in both sexes; caudal fin orange brown, single slanting translucent band at upper lobe, translucent to white margin in male, translucent with faint brown line along fin rays, caudal fin base with single black spot in female.</p><p><b>Habitats.</b> Shallow coastal waters and intertidal zones with sandy–muddy substrates.</p><p><b>Remarks.</b> The specimens obtained from Penang Island shares similar characteristics with the holotype of <i>S. nuchipunctatus</i>: D2 I,11; A I,13; P 16 and elongated black blotch over posterior spines. However, first dorsal fin spines extend only to the first fin ray of the second dorsal fin in both sexes of Penang specimens (vs extend to the central region of the second dorsal fin base in holotype) (Larson & Miller 1986).</p> |
