Based on holotype male, Oliveira, 1953: 316, figs 5–6. Antenna 1 peduncular article 1 without robust setae along posterior margin; Antenna 2 peduncular article 4 longer than article 5. Gnathopod 1 coxa anteroventral corner not produced, propodus posterodistal margin swollen; dactylus posterior margin not swollen at base. Gnathopod 2 propodus palm with broadly rounded posterodistal corner, Pereopod 5 basis posterior margin convex. Pleonite/urosomite dorsal spine formula (0 0 0 0 0). Uropod 3 outer ramus length 4 × breadth, 2.2 × longer than peduncle, 1-articulate. Telson lobes apically rounded, with 1 robust seta on inner margin.

Female. Unknown.

Remarks. Oliviera’s original description was based on the holotype and only specimen. Oliveira’s description omitted some details such as shapes of coxa 4 and epimera 1–3, and misinterpreted other characters such as the fusion of merus and carpus of gnathopod 2. Oliveira may have missed the basofacial robust seta on the peduncle of uropod 1, the small dorsolateral robust setae on urosomite 2 and the number of articles in uropod 3 outer ramus. Melita lagunae, has not been reported since its original description (Senna et al. 2012). This species should be redescribed from the original material and further collections made to ascertain the identity of the female. Olivier did, however, describe sufficient characters to diagnose and identify the species as outlined above. Two other species of Melita are recorded from Brazil: M. mangrovi and M. petronioi.

Melita lagunae is similar to M. petronioi. The two species differ as follows: the mandible palp article 1 subequal in length to article 2 in M. lagunae (article 2 longer than article 1 in M. petronioi), gnathopod 2 propodus palm lined with robust setae (with sparce robust setae in M. petronioi), the apical shape of the telsonic lobes is rounded in M. lagunae (subacute in M. petronioi). These are small differences but until M. lagunae is redescribed it is best not to synonymize these two species.

Melita lagunae is similar to M. mangrovi in having gnathopod 2 propodus palm acute, broadly rounded and lined with robust setae, and the smooth dorsolateral margins of the pleosome/urosome. Melita lagunae differs from M. mangrovi as follows: antenna 1 peduncular article 1 shorter that article 2, antenna 2 peduncular article 4 longer than article 5 (article 4 shorter than 5 in M. mangrovi); male gnathopod 1 propodus with anterodistal projection forming hood over dactylus (hood absent in M. mangrovi) and the form of the telson: as long as broad, lobes apically rounded, without dorsal setae in M. lagunae (telson longer than broad, lobes apically rounded, with dorsal robust setae in M. mangrovi).

Melita lagunae also bears some similarities with M. nitidula, such as the pleosome/urosome spine formula, the rounded lobes of the telson, and uropod 3 outer ramus 1-articulate. However, they can be distinguished by gnathopod 2 dactylus closing along palm in M. lagunae (closing across medial surface of propodus in M. nitidula), the length of the outer ramus of uropod 3 about 4 times length of peduncle in M. lagunae (twice length of peduncle in M. nitidula) and the presence of robust setae on the inner margins of the telson (setae absent in M. nitidula).

Habitat.
