•
This study examines the impact of the National Health Mission (NRHM) on public health outcomes in India by comparing the pre-NRHM (1991–2004) and post-NRHM (2005–2024) periods. The main objective is to evaluate whether the implementation of NRHM has significantly improved key health indicators and health care expenditure in the country. The study adopts a descriptive and analytical research design using secondary time-series data, and employs statistical tools such as trend analysis, compound annual growth rate (CAGR), and comparative analysis. To assess the policy impact, a dummy variable regression model is applied, where the pre-NRHM period is coded as 0 and the post-NRHM period as 1, along with control variables like GDP, population growth, and labor force participation. The findings reveal substantial improvements in health outcomes during the post-NRHM period, including a sharp decline in maternal mortality, a significant increase in life expectancy, and a steady reduction in birth rates, alongside a remarkable rise in total health care expenditure. The regression results further confirm that these changes are statistically significant, indicating a strong positive association between NRHM implementation and improved health indicators. The study concludes that NRHM has played a transformative role in strengthening India’s public health system and improving population health, although sustained investment, efficient resource utilization, and targeted policy interventions remain essential for maintaining and enhancing these achievements.

The study concludes that NRHM has been highly effective in enhancing public health outcomes and strengthening health infrastructure in India.
