contents

Abstract: Thanks to advances in construction technology, such as concrete structures and the elevator, the high-rise building became a reality in the architectural scene of Pernambuco from the mid 20 century. The insertion of this new object in the local architectural culture challenged architects to propose solutions for a society which was acquiring new habits. One of the major challenges resided in the transition from single family houses to high rise residential buildings, which rapidly would be the predominant type of living for local medium and high classes. How to respect traditional cultural habits linked to ground in a high-rise building? How to establish relationships between climate and environment in this new way of living? How to reinterpret traditional ways of screening and solar protection in this new scale? Those are some of the challenges that the architect Wandenkolk Tinoco faced after graduating from the then Faculdade de Belas-Artes do Recife, in 1958. In the school, he was a student of Delfim Amorim and Acácio Gil Borsói, two masters of the modern architecture in Pernambuco. Tinoco had worked with them and later, was their colleague at the same school, as Amorim's assistant. Tinoco developed a solid career turning out to be one of the major representatives of the local modern architecture, having great influence on the later generations, by his architectural practice as well as his teaching acitivities. In the 1970s, the decade of his mature works of his career was represented by some high rise residential buildings made for the company AC Cruz Company, particularly the buildings Villa Bella, Villa Mariana, Villa da Praia, Villa Cláudia and Villa Cristina. These buildings are the best representation of the Tinoco's search for the aggregation of the values of a house into the apartment After some considerations on the nature of the high-rise building and its introduction in the local culture, this paper focus on the high-rise residential buildings designed by Wandenkolk Tinoco in the 1970s. This will be made focusing in four themes. Firstly, the spatial organization, we analyze the permanence of cultural values of single residences in the plans of the new apartments, in other words, the reinterpretation of traditional spatial arrangements in the tall buildings. Secondly, in fabrication of the façade, we study the process of fabrication of the façade, the juxtaposition of materials, the new relationships between interior and exterior and the reinterpretation of vernacular and classical forms. Thirdly, the climatic adaptation, we investigate the observation of the local climate conditions, by elements such as hollow bricks, lattices verandahs, and peitoril ventilado. Finally, in the relationship with the urban context, we study the relationship between the buildings and the city, taking into consideration transitions between lobby, sidewalks, the use of landscape and the topographical levels, and the mediations with the more ample context. Despite the lack of studies on Wandenkolk Tinoco's work, his buildings demonstrate the flexibility and the capacity of modern architecture to root itself in different cultural contexts.
