| contents |
First published high-resolution map of mountain permafrost distribution in mainland Chile. Using field evidence from rock glaciers and boreholes with climate and terrain data, we found that more than 8,000 km2, mainly in the dry Andes of northern and central Chile, offer suitable conditions. This publication is based on a project funded by the Dirección General de Aguas, Ministerio de Obras Públicas, Chile, under Grant ‘Modelo de favorabilidad de ocurrencia de permafrost (PFI) en Chile Continental’, awarded to Atacama Ambiente Consultores. The permafrost index developed in this study is available also through the digital repository of the Dirección General de Aguas (DGA) at https://snia.mop.gob.cl/PIA/handle/20.500.13000/126863, which is the primary source of this data package.

The data package contains complementary products derived from the spatial permafrost favorability model:

Raster layers of permafrost favorability index values: Continuous spatial predictions representing the modeled permafrost favorability index across Chile.

Isolines of favorability index values: Vector contour lines extracted from the raster predictions, allowing clear visualization of spatial gradients and threshold-based permafrost zones.

PDF maps of permafrost distribution: High‑resolution figures summarizing the modeled permafrost distribution along Chile, suitable for reports, presentations, and communication with non‑technical audiences.

Legend of the permafrost favorability index (PFI) map for local interpration.

The methodology beyond this data package is documented in a publication currently under review in the journal The Cryosphere.
