•
This research examines transforming Maun International Airport from a congested tourism gateway into a strategic economic driver for Botswana's North West region through a 25-year feasibility study commissioned in 2025. Currently limited to 270 passengers/hour, the airport restricts aircraft size and economic potential despite being one of Africa's busiest by aircraft movements due to Okavango Delta tourism. The study evaluates expanding the existing site versus relocating to a greenfield location capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft and sustainable design. Key goals include diversifying beyond "enclave tourism" where revenue bypasses local economies, creating stronger domestic linkages through visitor spending and employment, establishing Maun as a regional aviation hub connecting to Victoria Falls and Windhoek, and aligning with Botswana's 2043 vision for Maun as an ecological smart city. The transformation aims to capture more tourism value locally while supporting national strategies for MICE tourism and high-value air cargo exports.
